He knew that people don’t fall in love over coffee. They don’t fall in love in a week.

Maybe if it was months or years of coffee and companionship. Maybe. But not on a weekday afternoon in a coffee shop.

He believed all these things. These were the lessons he had learned, the facts he lived by. He knew they were true. They just didn’t feel that way.

When he looked at the way Blayne’s shoulders tested the strength of his suit or the distracted way those big brown eyes kept glancing back at Ben, there was no amount of repeating these facts that could make Ben feel it. Instead, his head filled with memories of sex and kisses and laughter. His mind was flooded with images and emotions that he was sure there hadn’t been time to create over the past week.

It was as if he had forgotten all the rules and lessons he had learned in the gay world.

Pretty faces were a dime a dozen. And anyone could buy one from a plastic surgeon for a little bit more.

There were a lot of things Ben had forgotten in his life. But no matter how he tried to remind himself, he couldn’t seem to remember to follow his own life lessons. There was something stronger than that sitting right here in front of him.

It felt stronger than desire. It felt like instinct, like knowledge. No matter how he tried to shake himself and bring his thoughts back to the present, his mind kept tugging him in another direction. I know where I’m going, it said. Follow me.

It kept teasing him with sweaty thoughts and endless possibilities: Blayne with a tan; weekends in bed; a slow walk down a familiar path, hand in hand.

“I need index cards,” Blayne blurted suddenly, “and a break.”

He stood and stretched and headed for the door. Ben couldn’t be sure if it had been Blayne’s silly statement or his stretching body, but something gave Ben an immediate erection. He realized that it was the simple opportunity of the moment.

Ben counted to a hundred and excused himself to use the restroom.
